The little town of Kahana is located just past Napili, but before Kapalua; it is a fairly small sliver of West Maui, but it is a very important distinction. Kahana marks the rain barrier between Lahaina/Ka’anapli and Naplili/Kahana/Kapalua. If one looks at an aerial map of Kahana, it is noticeably greener than the Lahaina side because Kahana faces more Northwest. The geographical position of Kahana plays an important roll in the weather because it sits more on the windward (wind facing) side of the West Maui mountains thus receiving a majority of the rain on the west side. The lush greenery and forests of Kahana trap the rain and moisture, therefore keeping Kahana greener and cooler than Lahaina.
