Maui’s North Shore Surf Spots
Kahului Harbor

Kahului Harbor

Kahului Harbor is located on the north-central coast of Maui, home to the largest airport and harbor. Kahului town is the island business hub. Swells coming from 40 feet deep waters where the  ship channel was carved out jack up on a ledge that is 10ft deep or less creating three super fun breaks. Harbors needs a big north west, north or east to break. The first is Harbor Lights,” apartment complex on the shore”  It is a left hander that can get big and smoking on a large east swell.  The wave can start out waist high and end up 4 ft. overhead barreling as rolls along the ledge

. Doesn’t break like that often but when it does it’s it’s roping. Middles is super fun right or left that breaks right in from of the red channels buoy. Longboarders and stand-ups usually control the lineup. The best waves push to the west side “Walls” the deep channel water is refractured bouncing off the jetty creating a mini box like wedge. Bodyboarders and short boarders adept in navigating the steps and chucking barrels. On the other side of the harbor north side is the Wai Side.. Heavily populated by the locals, Pakus, Big right, rivermouth, churches and sand piles are all killer breaks. Just have some respect for the locals and you’ll be fine. “Eh’ no act up”. Local Vibe: Respect is vital

  • Kanaha Beach is right next to the airport. Because of it’s exposure it gets lots of swell though not a very critical wave. You can get rights off the main peak and surf for 200 yards. Great longboarding spot and well as standup paddle. The wind comes up often in the late morning so dawn patrol is better. It’s a long paddle out near a half mile.

    • Paia Beach park in a sand bottom bay the is great for boogie boarding and bodysurfing. Surfing can be had on bigger days when there is enough push from the outer reefs to bring swells into the bay. Located at north end of town laidback vibe. Many small shops and restaurants, healthy food stores and yoga studios, and a population of hippies, pseudo-hippies, windsurfers, kiteboarders, surfers, and artists, Paia is one of Maui’s most unique surf towns.

      Hookipa Beach Park

    • Ho’okipa Beach Park.  There are four main breaks here.Pavilions: The most easterly spot, just below the Ho’okipa Lookout. Pavilions is a right-hander and is a better choice for surfers of all abilities. Middles: Heading west from Pavilions is Middles, the main spot for longboard surfers. The wave breaks both right and left, though the lefts handle the wind better. H’Poko, or Point: Located on the west end of Ho’okipa Beach, Point offers up fun right-handers that break on a very shallow reef that can pound you. Crowded when conditions are on. The Lanes: Just west of Ho’okipa Beach is where Lanes is located. You can pick off both rights and lefts.  Get here early as the northeast trades come in mid morning, and after 11:00 windsurfers and kiteboarders can join the lineup. Local Vibe: Respect is vital especially at Pavilions.
